Kaunas University of Technology is an education, science and research university. The Institute of Environmental Engineering (APINI) was established in 1991 as an independent research unit affiliated to Kaunas University of Technology.  In 2000, APINI established an office in Vilnius.

The Institute of Environmental Engineering (APINI) specializes in research, education and consultancy work in areas related to environmental engineering, chemicals control and management, integrated environmental and quality management systems, cleaner production, waste prevention and management, environmental efficiency, eco-design, environmental impact assessment, modeling and management of surface water quality. APINI was one of the first institutions in Lithuania, which started working intensively on issues of environmental management in Lithuania.
